Generative AI tools such as ChatGPT are extremely powerful and are already helping millions of people become more productive in their work and daily lives. However, those who could benefit most from these tools – people with disabilities, unemployed people, refugees, etc – are often, through no fault of their own, unaware of the many ways that the tools can help them become more independent.
prompt_action believes that Generative AI holds the potential to break down many of the societal and environmental barriers that currently exclude people with disabilities, or those excluded from society, from full participation. Rather than viewing disability and exclusion as limitations within the individual, our approach recognises that it is often businesses’ and society’s failure to accommodate differences—through inaccessible technology, complex language, or simply an overwhelming focus on the majority—that disables and excludes people. By empowering individuals with accessible and powerful AI tools along with the practical skills to use them, we focus on removing these obstacles, promoting independence, and enabling everyone to access AI opportunities on equal terms.
prompt_action provides Generative AI skills through in-person, hands-on training that is tailored for the specific needs and outcomes of these different groups. We teach how to use Generative AI tools effectively for personal development, education, employability, and, most importantly, greater independence in daily life. The service is delivered not for profit, but as a public good.
Potential Audiences
Without wanting to apply specific identities to individuals and groups that can have very varied lived experiences, we believe the following generally recognised groups could benefit from the prompt action service:
- People with learning disabilities
- Neurodivergent people
- People with physical disabilities
- People in social care
- Long-term unemployed
- Episodic or transitionally homeless people
- People with Low Literacy or Limited Education
- Refugees and migrants
- Older adults
- Carers and Support Workers
Delivery Structure
- Initial Direct Training: Free or low-cost, small-group, hands-on workshops delivered by Prompt Action trainers. Content will be tailored to the needs and outcomes for the specific audience groups.
- Accessible Learning Materials: Visual guides, plain English, audio versions, and video tutorials to support trainers and participants.
- Medium-Term Train-the-Trainer Model: Initially delivered directly by prompt_action, the service will transition to a train-the-trainer model, enabling charities and community organisations to deliver training themselves and thus enabling scalability and local ownership.
- Longer-term tailored models: Initially using out-of-the-box LLMs, in the longer-term, the prompt_action team will develop fine-tuned AI assistants specifically for these groups to use.
Access to Tools
Participants will need access to internet-enabled smartphones, tablets, or computers to use the Generative AI tools effectively. The partnering charity or organisation identifying participants will be responsible for organising and facilitating access to suitable devices, whether the participants’ own, through loan schemes, shared facilities, or donations.
